March 7th, 2009...the first race of the newly established SoCal High School Racing league, a spinoff of the successful NorCal league. 80 high school racers from 15 schools start the race...Fast Forward 1 year to March 14th, 2010. Vail Lake is the start of the second season, 164 racers from 19 different schools line up from as far north as San Luis Obispo to as far south as Chula Vista. The first race had a single racer in the varsity girls division in '09, this year saw 4 girls lined up at the start with Tiana Row leading the pack and taking the win for the second consecutive year. The boys varsity field was led by 2009 overall winner Zack Valdez continuing where he left off last year. The jv and freshman fields always carry interesting story lines, numerous riders are racing for the first time and this is going to be an experience they will never forget.
Everyone remembers their first race, nerves, forgetting to drink, crashing, flat tires, exhaustion, and in the end they can't wait for more.
