Valpariso Cerro Abajo 2010

Valparaiso is classic Latin America, a city with rich history dating back to the early 1800’s, with color, warmth and energy. The buildings and neighborhoods have their own character and story; from the oldest stock exchange in Latin America to the over 20 funicular lifts that transport the people from their homes to the city, every corner of Valparaiso has a story. The breeze from the pacific created the port but it’s the Chilean people that bring it to life every day. On February 21st, 2010 thousands of people lined the streets and staircases for the Valparaiso Cerro Abajo urban downhill race. The course goes from Cerro Carcel to Plaza Anibal with jumps, drops, over 100 stair steps and finish line reminiscent of a football stadium. Practice and the race were held on Sunday, when the racers made their way down the course for the first time, the course was already packed with spectators, and the crowds only grew as the day went on.

Chris Van Dine led a strong group of North American riders and showed how experience pays off by qualifying first unfortunately CVD suffered a mechanical during his final run. World Cup racers Andrew Neethling and Filip Polc made the trip and were eager to put on a good show. For Neethling the day would end in qualifying after he crashed early in his run. Polc qualified in the top ten and took his spot on the hot seat after his final run. Chilean racer Enrique Genova put together an amazing final run to take second place behind Polc. For Polc winning VCA extended his streak of urban downhill race wins that include wins in Colombia, and Brazil. When the awards ceremony took place people were celebrating as If the Wanderers had won a football title.
